So here we go with the first idea

This is a time when you could be forgiven for thinking that fate has walked up to you and kicked you in the nether regions.

Terry Pratchett conceived a world that existed on the back of an elephant that roamed around and everyone on the beast's back were leading happy industrious lives. In times like these we might agree. the trouble is that as the elephant has been roaming around happily, and we on its back have been happily getting on with business a mouse was lurking ready to leap out, frighten the elephant and throw all the world into confusion.

Some businesses will fail, others will stagnate whilst a few will thrive, staying in good shape ready for the inevitable upswing in the economy. So my idea is for those who will not allow these blows to cower them.

Of course, since we do not know how long this cold blast in the economy will last it would be reckless to disregard the dangers of trying to blithely expand.

My suggestion is look for opportunities but keep the door open in case you need to escape.

Nothing could be truer in this climate than the need to avoid over committing capital resources to items that could turn into a millstone if the idea does not pan out.

Neatly this brings me onto my vested interest. My company www.Icanhire.com is a major mover in van hire in London.

We live in a world where most of our businesses have a need for mobility whether by commercial vehicle or car. So, one of the easiest decisions to make is not to buy something. So you decide NOT to buy a new van but to make do with an old van that keeps breaking down, causing late deliveries to clients.

The alternatives for acquiring a van, contract hire, lease, HP all add up to one thing, a financial commitment for the next 3 years. But seeing more than 3 months ahead with any degree of clarity is difficult.

www.icanhire.com has available a deal called flexi-rent - basically you rent for 12 weeks after that you can keep or extend it for as long as you wish. After the 12 weeks you hand the van back at anytime without penalty.

This gives you the chance to trial new ideas; INCREASE your delivery power but without the thought that you are tied into a vehicle that may prove to be an inappropriate choice or surplus to requirements.

The deal is not just for clients who want van hire in London but across the UK.

No big deposits that sap cash flow; no long term commitments; no need to worry about servicing.

This deal is tailor made for our times.

But give us your ideas whether you have a vested interest, as I have in car and van hire in London or not.
